The Global Leadership Foundation

Saidler & Co. is proud to maintain a long-standing partnership with the Global Leadership Foundation.

The Global Leadership Foundation exists to make available, discreetly and in confidence, the experience of former leaders to today’s national leaders. It does so through its network of Members – former Presidents, Prime Ministers, senior government ministers and other distinguished leaders – drawn together by a desire to give something back to the world.

Mutually Beneficial Partnership

Saidler & Co. has been a proud partner of the Global Leadership Foundation (GLF) for many years. Since the beginning of the partnership with GLF, we have always sought mutually beneficial ways to enhance our cooperation. Besides the donation aspect of our partnership, Saidler & Co. also participates in the GLF's International Council - a community of supporters comprised of business leaders, philanthropists and foundations. In addition, selected GLF members are invited to contribute their excellent insights and expertise through articles in Saidler & Co.'s House View that focus on current events, politics, and geopolitics.

Global Network of 45 Former Heads of State

The GLF is a global network built around its 45 Members, all former Heads of State or Government, or other distinguished leaders with first-hand experience of the difficulties of political leadership. Its members contribute to the work of GLF as private individuals, motivated by a desire to give something back to the world. Working in small teams, in their personal capacity, members offer private and confidential advice to current Heads of Government. Among the esteemed Members of the Global Leadership Foundation are:

  • Joe Clark,

Effective governance is essential to the delivery of opportunities, development and accountability. Yet as new forces emerge to advance a more free, open and sustainable model of development, many leaders face polarized societies, populism, economic crises, institutional failure, the flouting of international norms and a plethora of advice from international agencies, their donor communities and private consultancy firms.

GLF comes with no agenda of its own, or of any government or organization. It is a not-for-profit foundation and its Members no longer seek high office. The agenda is always set by the Head of Government, with GLF Members acting as personal, private advisors, offering impartial advice, given on a peer-to-peer basis, drawing on their own personal experience.

Founded by FW de Klerk

The GLF was founded by FW de Klerk, who was President of South Africa from 1989 to 1994. As president of South Africa, he brought the apartheid system of racial segregation to an end and negotiated a transition to majority rule in his country. He and Nelson Mandela jointly received the 1993 Nobel Prize for Peace for their collaboration in efforts to establish nonracial democracy in South Africa. He established the F.W. de Klerk Foundation in 2000 and the Global Leadership Foundation in 2004. Since its formation, GLF has worked in 23 countries worldwide, with various engagements continuing for several years.
